This long-standing Soho eatery serves as a reminder that Indian restaurants weren’t always divvied up into cut-price canteens and glossy modern joints. Instead, Gopal’s is a refreshingly old-fashioned, cheap-as-chips curry house.
Established in 1988 and still family-run, Gopal’s features a neat dining room complete with wicker furniture and plants lining the walls. Order poppadums and chutneys while you peruse the menu of classic Indian dishes, and don’t forget naans with your main course either.
Pick from the likes of butter chicken, a lightly spicy rogan josh, or tandoor-cooked sheekh kebab. There are thalis too, while side dishes include saag aloo and chilli paneer. Enjoy scoops of kulfi or gulab jamun for dessert, and make the most of a short and sweet international wine list.
