A chippie-cum-kebab shop on Charlotte Street might sound distinctly downmarket, but iconic Gigs is great for a tasty drop-in. The site was given a spruce-up in 2011, making the small seated area more contemporary & inviting, although staff are seldom short of smiles. Get your fix of fried goods here, be it a traditional saveloy, a moreish wrap stuffed with succulent lamb doner or the ultimate treat – Gigs fish & chips. Try the crisp, moist battered haddock, which comes with huge helpings of hand-cut chips (£1.50 for a small bag or £4 for an almost double-sized portion), liberally smothered in your choice of ketchup, mayo or vinegar. It’s pretty decent value – no wonder the lunchtime queues often stretch down the street.
