SquareMeal Review of Gail's Battersea

Gail’s burgeoning London branches have been keeping yummy mummies in sourdough & babyccinos since 2005. This clutch of fashionably appointed bakery/cafés – all white walls & exposed brick – pride themselves on their ‘no nasties’ approach to artisan baking & their place at the hub of the community. Counters groan with breads, cakes & pastries from all over the world, including croissants, pumpernickel & chocolate halva buns to eat in or take away. You can also get more substantial fill-ups – perhaps a full breakfast (washed down with Union coffee or JING tea) or a fairly healthy lunch of soup, salad or a sandwich. It all looks dreamy, although some readers suggest it’s a case of style over substance. ‘Confused’ & ‘slightly abrasive’ staff – not to mention elevated prices – certainly don’t do Gail’s any favours.

Gail's fulfills its brief to supply the yummy mummies of Nappy Valley with tempting little morsels at swallowable prices perfectly well but it's a little too smug for my liking. I came in here to meet a yummy mummy friend, who was without her kids for once, and had a perfectly decent little feta quiche, a tasty chewy oaty biscuit thing and a coffee which all went down fine. But lunch is not really Gail's forte as the choice is so limited given their emphasis is on cakes and other baked treats. Some staff were holding an annoyingly loud meeting at the next table and they didn't seem to notice an extremely irritating fire alarm beep sounding every 20 seconds (or if they did they didn't try to fix it anyway) and they actually told off the ladies next to us who tried to open the back door in an attempt to get some air into the glass roofed sauna. If I had just dropped the little blighters off at school and wanted a caffe latte and cupcake to brighten up the day, I'd pop in, but for anything else I'd try to find something a bit more interesting.
