The very picture of a quaint, 16th-century village pub (complete with village green and duck pond), The Fox feeds and waters its customers with honest grub, proper ales and well-chosen wines. Inside it promises a tasteful mix of classy fabrics, patterned wallpaper and heavy rustic furniture to go with the old beams, timbers and arched windows. The menu cruises through pies, burgers, salads, pasta and the like, but you can also get more upbeat dishes such as slow-braised beef with horseradish mash or seared pork medallions in Aspall cider sauce with caramelised apples. Sandwiches, wraps and Essex huffers (aka baps) are the mainstays at lunchtime, while desserts could include pear and chocolate tart or stem ginger pudding. Adnams Bitter and Broadside share the pumps with brews from Nethergate (another East Anglian favourite).
