It’s named after a tiny settlement in Wester Ross, but First Coast plies its trade as an engaging, eclectic bistro near Haymarket station. Inside, it feels fresh and carefully maintained, with
pastel colours, well-trodden wood floors and perky staff on hand to do the necessary duties. The kitchen knows its stuff and plunders the globe without resorting to fusion excesses. Come here for
pork cheeks in black vinegar, braised ox cheek with polenta, Thai marinated chicken salad or Sri Lankan crab curry with jasmine rice. There are some home-grown flavours too (Aberdeen Angus steaks,
maple-glazed ham hough), while puds could bring anything from rhubarb fool to gingerbread with poached pear and crème fraîche. Regular themed night focus on food from particular regions or
countries (South Africa, for example), and there’s a short, affordable wine list too.
