Descend the stairs from Salcombe’s Fore Street to discover a waterside bar/brasserie that tries and partially succeeds in delivering a fashionable New England look, but its cramped, basement-like setting means it falls short. However, it is the decked terrace with its relaxed vibe and jaw-dropping views across the estuary that is really the hot ticket. Go early evening for a bottle of Bolly, not bad value at £70, and some simple, if uninspired, battered octopus, prawn cocktail or steak-frites.
