The Crown & Cushion is the latest acquisition from the guys at Provenance Inns, and a very fine pub it is too. Smack in the middle of pretty Welburn (not far from the roaring A64), it’s been spruced up nicely, with all the best bits retained (stone floors, open fires and a tap room) and the nasty old bits consigned to history. The house style is linen napkins, gleaming glasses and candles on the tables, plus a seasonal menu that has something for everyone – from pea and mint ravioli, spiced rabbit and baby carrot terrine or roast cod with Yorkshire chorizo and chickpea broth to classic seafood platters, burgers and treacle sponge with custard. Local beers are properly kept and there are plenty of wines by the glass. On good days, kick back outside and drink in the views over the Hambleton Hills.
