About

This Caribbean humdinger has been around for a good 30 years, adding a much-needed shot of island colour to the streets of the capital. Step into any of its branches, and you’ll be instantly cheered by its tropical murals, gaudily striped bars, brightly hued vintage holiday ads and, of course, its outsized boom boxes and decorative barrels of rum. The menu of familiar Caribbean food will give you a lift too: saltfish fritters come with a mouth-wateringly fruity tamarind and guava sauce, jerk chicken is beautifully blackened, and the rich, tender Guyanese pepperpot stew benefits from 48 hours simmering on the stove. To drink, it has to be rum – the 372-strong list is a record-breaking A to Z of the world’s brands and blends, organised by country. Friendly service, a lively vibe, good-value set menus, and free rum masterclasses all cement Cottons’ deserved popularity.

Rude and illogical treatment of customers

I booked a table here for myself and two friends from out of town

The table was booked for 6pm. At 7:36 after serving just ONE COURSE the waitress informed us that they would need the table back at 7:45. When we asked if we could have a dessert she reluctantly produced the menu.

Someone who claimed to be a manager then came to the table to insist that it was standard for them to only allow diners to keep tables for 1.5 hrs.... whilst I tried to highlight that 1) They had never told us there was such a time limit either when booking nor on arrival. 2) They had only managed to serve ONE course.

The so called manager continued to rudely argue... tapping away furiously at his ipad to show us how all of this was our fault. Whilst I stared at the two EMPTY tables adjacent to us.

Its such a shame to go into one of the few fine dining Caribbean restaurants and be treated so rudely. It was embarassing that friends from overseas were subject to such treatment. It was a very long awaited reunion for us that was completely destroyed by staff that clearly cared nothing for their customers and even less for the restaurant and brand that they work for.

21st birthday ruined

For my 21st birthday I went to cottons. Although I reserve and put a 150 pound deposit for an ordinary table of two I wanted to opt out because it stank of vomit. There was piss stains and the stench of vomit from the night before event. I asked to leave with my money back and they locked the door. I stayed of course, because of the tall white men shouting at me and my best friend fake terms and conditions. I was intimidated. They then served me 'jerked chicken' and upon one bite I ran into the bathroom. No toiletpaper nor soap of course was there after I spent 10 minutes throwing up undercooked chicken. The rice was hard and not cooked nor was the peas. On top of that, although their card machine wasn't working due to their wifi, they shouted at us in front of the whole restaurant. I'm outraged.
