Côte Reading

SquareMeal Review of Côte Reading

There are Francophiles behind this nationwide French brasserie group – that much is obvious. Every last detail, from the rattan terrace furniture and patterned tile floors to the bentwood chairs and mirrored walls, has been borrowed from across the Channel. But Côte isn’t backward-looking; it’s a modern interpretation of a classic concept that’s designed to suit the British market. It also ticks off all the classics when it comes to food and wine: you can always find steak-frites, moules marinière and crème caramel here, as well as the bottles of Chinon, Picpoul and even Orangina you might want to quaff with them. ‘Plat rapides’ such as hachis parmentier or poulet grillée, plus fortnightly changing specials including duck confit are useful additions to the carte, as is the ‘formule’ breakfast of full English, juice and coffee. A solid high-street presence.

Best Restaurant in Reading

We have been to this restaurant since the beginning. We've never found anything wrong about it. The staff is extremely nice. The meals are never disappointing. We've tried other places and then regretted it and came back to Cote. Maybe it is not the same all over the country but in Reading, it is top. I find it difficult to recommend a dish because I love them all but the pork belly and the crêpe praline are divine. All the friends I sent there were very pleased .

Pâté like liquid. Repulsive texture. Salads all lettuce, not much else. Fish pie pre-prepared and microwaved. Unpalatable, dry, fish hard, leeks stringy. Thank God it was a small serving! Risotto made with cream and butter, no option to make one without. Staff admitted this was another pre-prepared dish which they just microwave and there was no chef to make a fresh serving. This is not in accord with their advertising statement that all food is freshly prepared on site. It clearly isn't. Service ok, polite and apologetic. However, at prices like this you expect genuinely fresh preparation, qualified chef on site, better portions, and much much better quality. Feels like typical chain store economics at work. Corners have been cut to increase profit. Staff left to cope in a very embarrassing situation. Very disappointing. Will not return.
