Why fly to Lourdes when you can take waters imbued with miraculous powers in an ecclesiastically themed, Hispanic-styled basement in Camberwell? Located in the bowels of the Church Street Hotel, Communion’s praiseworthy cocktails include Pretty Little Shanty Town (Gosling’s rum, Velvet Falernum, ginger, lime, orange bitters and a gloop of molasses), divinely presented tiki-style and garnished with candied orange wheels and honeycomb. Similarly attractive in a pink sugar-rimmed coupe, Illegal Cherry (a mezcal and Cherry Marnier martini) hits the perfect bittersweet spot by including the juice of grilled Sicilian lemons. Pillowy, flavoursome tortillas are among the reasonably priced, generously portioned, tapas available from Angels & Gypsies' kitchen upstairs. Live funk and world music sets are a bonus, and a glass of wine (however astringent) served with communion wafers on arrival is a nice touch.
