An offshoot of Caracoli in Alresford, Hampshire, this modern café is the hottest ticket in town. Found above the glass-fronted Steamer Trading Cookshop, the long room is a light contemporary mix of pastel shades, glass, limed floorboards & Italian tables & chairs. Topping the seating bill though are the two prime people-watching high stools looking straight down Guildford’s cobbled High Street, while an integral glass-floored terrace has proved a fair weather hit. The food doesn’t disappoint either. A beguiling array of home-baked cakes (chocolate fondant to gluten-free passion fruit & orange cakes) keep the sweet-toothed crowds happy, while savouries & lunches take note of quality local produce, perhaps Isle of Wight tomato tart with herb mascarpone, or smoked salmon & watercress roulade to fresh sandwiches (flatbread with roasted red pepper, houmous & rocket), while salads might strike out with tarragon chicken with toasted pine nuts.
