The plush market town of Holt is home to Byfords, a family-run emporium specialising in fine edibles. It’s a bustling beamed café and deli housed in a beautiful brick-and-flint building, with a few well-appointed bedrooms above. The café is open all day, and its hearty cooked breakfasts featuring the likes of kedgeree or Norfolk kippers (from the nearby Cley Smokehouse) are legendary. Cheese and charcuterie boards are a popular choice for lunch, afternoon tea is a good call, and straightforward dishes such as ‘posh pizzas’, roast chicken or confit duck with horseradish mash and port jus are just the ticket come dinnertime. The deli is a great place to stock up on local cheeses, such as Norfolk Dapple or Mrs Temple’s Binham Blue, as well as cured meats, preserves, fantastic breads and baked goods.
