A manifestation of Deptford’s burgeoning regeneration, Buster M is a post-industrial, DJ bar/kitchen/arts and events space that anticipates the ‘urban village lifestyle’ to come. The venue is named after Sir Alex Bustamante, Jamaica’s first Prime Minister, and occupies two old railway arches. Phlegmatic young owner Gordon McGowan was raised in Montego Bay, a fact reflected in his concise range of £7.50 cocktails where rum takes centre-stage: try Orange Dark & Stormy, Mama’s homemade punch or Lychee Mojito. Mad Ting, a gin, whisky and brandy Island Iced Tea, provides a powerful alternative. There’s a fair choice of wines too, along with London craft beers (and Red Stripe, natch). Food also follows the Caribbean theme, with pepper shrimp or salt-fish fritters, followed by jerk chicken, rice and peas (£8.50); jackfruit burger; or jerked pork belly – all made with love. Film screenings, live entertainment and community events are set to follow.
