A fun spot for clandestine imbibing, Blake’s is a ‘secret’ bar above a family-friendly Young’s gastropub – hidden behind a fake bookcase. Enter and you’ll find a small, intimate sitting room filled with jewel-coloured armchairs and quirky knick-knacks; there’s a roaring fire at one end and a tiny corner bar at the other. Here, modish cocktails and Peckham-ised takes on classics are served, plus a select list of craft beers and easy-drinking wines. The vibe depends on which night you visit; this quiet bolthole becomes distinctly rowdier during one of its regular Battle of the Breweries events or comedy nights. Food is limited to burgers (the best being the meaty option, with a dense beef patty, smoked bacon, creamy relish and a soft brioche bun) and sharing boards – try the oozing baked Camembert – but ask nicely and the laid-back staff will let you order dessert from the broader pub menu.
