Bistro Aix

SquareMeal Review of Bistro Aix

Almost 10 years have passed since this casually elegant bistro first opened, & north Londoners have been happily attending ever since. Chef/proprietor Lynne Marie Sanders trained with some of France’s best, including Alain Ducasse, & the result is an extensive menu that speaks of both class & confidence. You’ll always find classic fish & onion soups & steak-frites, as well as the odd Italian interloper such as osso bucco, but the list also contains the more imaginative likes of seared Cornish scallops with cauliflower purée & white truffle essence, or lapin à la moutarde, stuffed with onion & brioche. Warm blueberry tarte with lavender ice cream makes a comforting finale. To accompany the food, try the 250ml or 450ml ‘pots lyonnaise’ from the mainly French wine list. Bistro Aix is now open on Mondays, & during the week there’s a £15 set menu.

perfect evening

we ha a lovely time. service was very good, pleasant and efficient. Food was exceptional from start to finish. We especially enjoyed the ability to talk with our guests and not have to shout, even though it was busy. highly recommended!

Back on form
This used to be a superb French bistro but gradually became tired - same menu, set in a rut. It's now back to its old form with a fresh, simpler (but still imaginative) menu of food cooked how you would want to find it in a really decent rural French cafe. Service is good, tables maybe a bit too close together but Aix succeeds in providing good food for an enjoyable evening meal.

This place is considered a North London hidden gem and I can see its appeal. Having been only once and ordering the set menu which was very good value it was clear why customers go back. From the outside it looks like the Indian restaurant it once was but once you step in through the curtain covered doorway and smell garlic frying and see candles flickering you are somewhat transported. My only criticism and the reason service scored low was the dismisal of our order by the head waiter (could've been owner) as we all had the set menu and I guessed that pre Christmas he would have preferred us to be spending more per head. Would go back and try the main menu next time if only to keep the owner happy.

Best restaurant ever! I've been there several times, and I never left disappointed. The food is fresh and during the week is available a delicious and relatively cheap set menu. And what a wine list!

I've lived locally for three years now and I never get tired of going to this restaurant. The a la carte is quite reasonable and during the week the prix fixe is a steal. Service can seem a little cold at times but that is only a minor quibble and if you are used to eating regularly in France then you probably wont even notice. Food is top drawer, although they could do with keeping the terrine out of the fridge as if you are an early bird it will be coldd and therefore the taste will be impaired. Other than that I've never had a bad dish here, its definitely the place to eat in North London, and the only place I have had better food in town was in South Kensington at a much more expensive bistro.

Bistro Aix is a hidden gem. The extraordinary quality of food and service rivals the West End's most famous restaurants. I tell all my friends about it!
