Brighton rock royalty Fatboy Slim has diversified since the frenzy of his DJ days – this is not his first stake in a restaurant, but it’s certainly the closest to his home and his heart. This arty, surfy mash-up is a friendly, down-to-earth spot set just behind the Brighton/Hove promenade, but it actually faces Hove Lagoon, a watersports hub where you can watch others indulging in a bit of stand-up paddling or wakeboarding as you sip your beer or chow down on that bacon-cheeseburger. There’s no pretension here: everyone is welcome, the menu offers the likes of fry-ups, bagels, paninis and pizzas, and locals make regular pilgrimage for the best coffee in town. What sets this place apart is its community feel: you can relax with one of the books from the shelves, stop in for a cake after letting the kids loose in the nearby paddling pool, or even plan a party.
