A few years ago, it was pretty unusual to order a meal kit. The vast majority of people would either cook from scratch or eat out. But now, partly due to the pandemic, meal kits have exploded into a multi-million pound industry. On the one hand, there are subscription recipe box services such as HelloFresh, Gousto and Mindful Chef, which offer day-to-day meals to prepare at home. But on the other, many restaurants have launched their own take, usually aimed more at special occasions, such as meal kits for Valentine’s day.
This doesn’t come as a huge shock, given there are already Michelin-starred restaurants offering home delivery. However many home diners don’t want takeaway, preferring to be part of the process, and that’s where meal kits come in. If you haven’t already, make sure you check out our super comprehensive guide to the best meal kits.
This guide covers another food trend that’s only on the rise - veganism. You only need to read one of our vegan guides, like the best vegan restaurants in London or the best vegan afternoon tea to see how popular it’s become. Thousands of foodies have tried a plant-based diet this year, so if you're one of them - or just curious - make sure you read our ultimate guide to Veganuary. It covers everything you need to know.
So, given the popularity of these two trends, it seems only natural to do a deep dive into vegan meal kits. We’ve covered all the bases, from cheap and cheerful sandwich kits to extravagant fine dining feasts. Regardless of your required price point, you can rest easy knowing there isn’t an animal product in sight.
We’ve made sure to include how much each one costs, where they deliver and a link to the product itself so you can make the best decision and get an order in.
Phomo Vegan Night in for Two
What: Phomo is on a mission to bring restaurant-quality pho to your home with its nourishing pho meal kits. Although not exclusively vegan, we're big fans of its plant-based bundle, which includes ingredients for fresh summer rolls and a bowl of pho. There is a little bit of prep involved - such as chopping the veg, frying the tofu, heating up the stock and cooking the noodles - but it's all very straightforward and doesn't take long. Besides, the prep is all part of the fun! The summers rolls are filled with crunchy veg and lemongrass tofu and served with a sweet nuoc cham dipping sauce. Then, it's back to the kitchen to quickly whip up a warming bowl of pho, complete with rice noodles, tofu, spring onions and a 16-hour broth. You also get a whole jar of chilli oil for an extra kick, which you can keep and use again! We loved that the packaging is as minimal as possible and mostly recyclable, too. You can also order the kit without the summer rolls, which is excellent value at less than £10 a head.
