Beelzebab serves vegan doner kebabs in Brighton. It is located in The Hope and Ruin, an independent music venue on Queens Road in the city centre. Food is served throughout the day, with its central location meaning it’s the perfect place to call in after a day of sightseeing, as well as for some pre or post-gig food. The selection of beers is vast, including several local craft ales and beers, many of which taste excellent when paired with the food. The result is a modern take on classic kebab culture.
The menu is broad and designed to complement drinking. There’s six loaded fries options, including chippy tea (peanut satay and raspberry chilli jam), fries a-go-go (thousand island dressing, melty cheese and crispy onion), and fritz’s fries (sauerkraut, gherkin, crispy onion and curry ketchup).
The doner ‘meat’ is made from seitan and served two ways. There’s the Beelzebab (pitta filled with fresh vegetables, home tzatziki and chilli sauce) or the big ben (same fillings plus a nine inch tofu dog with mustard and ketchup). This same tofu dog is also used in a range of hot dog offerings. These include the dirty kraut (seitan doner ‘meat’, chilli sauce, sauerkraut, gherkin, crispy onion, mustard and ketchup), chilli dog (chilli no carne and diced onion), and the norm (fried onion, mustard and ketchup).
Rounding out the savoury section is a range of bar snacks and sides, many of which use meat alternatives, such as the pengest poppers (chicken style poppers served with the special house sauce) and the hoisin beneath my vvings (chicken style VVings coated in hoisin sauce and topped with sesame seeds). Two desserts complete Beelzebab’s offering: ice cream (supplied by Boho Gelato) or doughnuts from Cat Burglar Dough Co. The whole menu can also be ordered on Deliveroo.
