Occupying the basement premises in Leadenhall Market that were formerly home to Lay & Wheeler wine merchants, this sibling to Bedales’ bars in Borough Market & Spitalfields retains the modest dimensions, scrubbed yellow brick & oenophile focus of its predecessor. The wine list makes room for a scattering of offbeat choices, including Condrieu, Bandol & some interesting bottles from Oregon among the more mainstream varietals & regions. Bedales is also noted for its busy programme of wine-related events, from the regular Tuesday night ‘flag’ tastings to, say, promotions on German Riesling or appropriate wines for barbecues. The menu plays it straight, with a no-nonsense selection of sandwiches & paninis, sharing platters, salads & quiche.
