SquareMeal Review of Beach Hut

Housed beneath Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen restaurant, the Beach Hut is surely one of the best beachside eateries of its kind in north Cornwall. Inside, Californian chic meets Cornish cool, but the eye is naturally drawn to what is arguably the region’s top surf beach. Great burgers, locally caught mackerel (fried or grilled) & more pricey rib-eye steaks are the staples, preceded perhaps by squid with aïoli & lemon or local crab with a seaweed & cucumber salad, ponzu & wasabi dressing. Friendly, efficient staff complement the laid-back vibe, & the child-friendly ethos extends to activity books & crayons as well as child seats. Meanwhile, grown-ups can chill out with local beers or Addlestones cider, plus affordably priced wines: try the fruity sweetness of a cool Chardonnay/Torrontes blend as the perfect antidote to a morning in the surf.

About

Located right on the sands of Watergate Bay, The Beach Hut is a contemporary restaurant serving a wide-ranging menu of international dishes, made using local Cornish ingredients. Part of the Watergate Bay Hotel complex, this buzzy restaurant has a laidback vibe, which makes it a great spot for all occasions. Whether you’re looking for somewhere child-friendly where you can bring the whole family for lunch or want to go for a hearty dinner followed by a few drinks, The Beach Hut is a fantastic option and has the added bonus of stunning sea views.

The interiors of The Beach Hut have been done to create a relaxed vibe for customers to enjoy their food in.  Chic tables and chairs sit on wooden floors and a minimalist bar lies at the far end of the dining room. Large windows ensure the room is never dark and gloomy and also provide glorious views of the sea, particularly in the evening when the sun is setting.

In terms of food at The Beach Hut, the menu begins with a number of dishes which can be ordered in big or small sizes. These include sumac semolina fried squid with a lime and fish sauce dressing and black garlic mayo, whipped smoked mackerel served with seaweed and toasted ciabatta crostini, and moules frites made with local Cornish mussels. Burgers make up a large part of the main menu with options on offer including a classic beef burger, as Thai fish burger and a vegan burger, while other more substantial options range from fried chicken with Mexican slaw and fries, to a chicken korma. A selection of desserts and cakes are also available at The Beach Hut.

An extensive drinks menu covers plenty of ground with highlights including some creative takes on classic cocktails and a decent selection of wines.

I love the beach hut at watergate bay, it feels like a proper Cornish cafe but with restaurant style food. The decor is amazing with surf boards on the walls and funky lights. If you visit you need to try their extreme hot chocolate with squirty cream marshmallows and chocolate buttons. What more could a girl want!
