Roll up, roll up to Be At One – the all comers’ bar chain that came into being in the late 1990s, the heyday of the ‘style bar’. Happily, it eschews prohibitive velvet ropes and po-faced bartenders in favour of inclusive venues where cocktails are taken seriously, but the mixologists aren’t too up themselves to do you a Sea Breeze. The group now has more than 20 sites (its strongholds are in student towns), and it sticks to a tidy formula of low-key design, high-footfall locations and an exhaustive array of cocktail creations. Cheesy drinks and cheesy tunes are a feature of Friday nights, but they’ll also mix you a Martinez, Negroni or Shaky Pete’s Ginger Brew if Screaming Orgasms aren’t your thing. Good for parties, work dos and other ‘more the merrier’ occasions.
