Bar Daskal is a wine and sherry bar that also serves cold tapas in the heart of London Bridge's latest shopping and dining district, Borough Yards. It is brought to you by the Harts Group of Barrafina and Parrillan fame (these two sister restaurants also have locations in Borough Yards).
Bar Daskal's home of Borough Yards is the capital’s new cultural and retail-focused renovation. This social, cultural and shopping hub is woven from historic urban fabric. A lost medieval street system has been revived. Once-forgotten warehouses and railway arches houses are now retail spaces, welcoming visitors from all over the UK. This is a destination for commuters, tourists and anyone in between who find themselves in this, one of London's most historic areas.
The bar is named after the Hart brothers' grandfather Vladimir Daskalof, a Bauhaus artist, Balearic painter, sculptor, designer and sailor who worked under the name Daskal. Vladimir (who was Bulgarian) and his wife Helen (who was Scottish) fell in love with the Mallorcan village of Estellencs where they settled. After their life at sea, they build a house in Estellencs, where they raised the Hart brothers' mother, Stefa. The Hart brothers themselves have visited Estellencs every year to this day, so the name comes steeped in their family's history and present.
Sam Hart says, “My love of Spain and its cuisine began as a child in the house my grandfather built in the small village of Estellencs. Even though Barrafina was largely modelled on Barcelona’s Cal Pep, the legacy of C’an Daskal has been an ever-present influence throughout my career. It is wonderful to honour these memories by bringing Bar Daskal, Barrafina and Parrillan south of the river.”
For a quick drink after work or long catchup with an old friend over excellent Spanish wines and cherries, this is the perfect spot.
