Like all the trendiest cocktail bars in the country, Bar 196 in Cambridge doesn’t do marketing. Customers are a mix of locals, those in the know, and those who have happily stumbled in – all of which makes for the buzzy vibe of people with a shared secret. Tight seating in the tiny bar and knockout cocktails keep it friendly too. The Strawberry Daiquiri is particularly good, but the list of drinks is long so it’s best to settle in and try a few. If you need something to settle your stomach after viewing the bizarre choice of photos in the loos, try something from the limited range of nibbles offered (the likes of charcuterie, olives, salads and breads). Don’t worry, the unassuming exterior is easy enough to find if you keep your eyes peeled when heading down the bustling Mill Road: the clue is in the name.
