It is easy to see why this Ask Italian, located in the historical town of Colchester, look as cosy and homey as it does – it is a converted house after all. It almost feels like you are eating in an Italian nonna’s house, the only give-away being the modern takes on Italian cuisine, but it definitely works.
Expect to find a different take on pizza with the pizza prima – a stone-baked base that is longer and crispier then your normal pizza base. You can pick from a range of toppings too. For example, if you are being health conscious, the super green topping with kale, asparagus, onions and vegan mozzarella is a great option. The caprina with goat’s cheese, tomatoes, olives and mozzarella is a good choice for the not-so health conscious too. If pizza isn’t your thing, the main menu features the likes of sea bass al forno with tomatoes, new potatoes, mushrooms, spinach, and white wine, or pollo Milanese served with a choice of roast potatoes or chips.
Ask also caters to a number of dietary requirements with specific vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free menus. On the latter you’ll find a majority of the dishes from the main menu, just with gluten free substitutes meaning you don’t have to worry about missing out on the best parts of the Italian cuisine.
When it comes to the vegan menu, expect an animal product-free take on spag bol with the lentil ragu, served with mixed vegetables. Or opt for the fettuccine con melanzane with tomato, garlic and basil sauce.
On the dessert menu, you’ll find baked chocolate gnocchi with a Nutella dipping sauce, a sweet take on the traditional pasta dish. The panna cotta and vegan blood orange chocolate tart are also bound to satisfy any sweet cravings you may be having.
