With a name like Ammonite, you know you’re on Dorset’s world-renowned Jurassic Coast, and this casual restaurant within the Alexandra Hotel’s bespoke Orangery proves the point with some sweeping sea views. During the day, the kitchen manages brunch, light lunchtime bites and afternoon tea, but dinner is the main event – a fixed-price menu of modern dishes with a provenance imprint and plenty of locally sourced ingredients on show. Seafood is a strong suit (think monkfish cheeks in Town Mill beer batter with garlic mayo or braised Lyme Bay octopus with saffron, black risotto, sea kale and pickled seaweed), but there is plenty more besides. Starters of roasted summer radishes with whipped feta, leeks, poppy seeds and mustard ‘frills’ could precede Dorset pork tenderloin and black pudding Wellington with savoy cabbage, sage and onion purée. while desserts might bring Cheddar Valley strawberry pannacotta with strawberry gel, purée and chocolate dust. Locally produced spirits and English sparkling wines are a feature of the drinks list.
