Under the same ownership as The Longroom – the previous (disappointing) venture on this site – Barsmith provides a minor reworking of its predecessor’s theme. The decor has barely been touched, still presenting the peeling Victorian warehouse look. What is new, is the food and drinks menu. A list of 10 cocktails, incorporating infused spirits created in a ‘lab kitchen’, offers the likes of Milky Way (white chocolate-infused vodka, coffee-infused rum, Amaretto and cream), and Hot Stuff Baby (a citrus-infused vodka, carrot juice, ginger and chilli Sour), both at £8.95. The staff managed a fair stab at an off-menu Bloody Mary, save for an absence of the requested Tabasco – a poor show at any bar ‘specialising in cocktails’. Craft ales include Shoreditch Triangle and Gamma Ray on tap, and wine kicks off at £17. Pizzas (’nduja; foraged spinach; pesto and rocket), arancini, and cheese and charcuterie boards complete the not entirely unfamiliar picture.
