About RSA House

RSA House is an inspiring and versatile venue in central London with several unique spaces suitable for multiple types of events. This Georgian townhouse effortlessly combines original 18th century architecture with contemporary features, so you can benefit from both a stunning backdrop and modern amenities. There are 11 unique events spaces spread across four floors, which are able to accomodate everything from lavish events for up to 220 guests, to intimate occasions for just 20 people.

Looking to hire RSA House for your next corporate event? Its flexible spaces can be hired separately or in conjunction with one another, to ensure your event flows seamlessly. Unique to RSA House is the Durham Street Auditorium. Located under a tunnel, it features exposed brickwork, arched ceilings and can seat up to 70 people, with theatre-style tiered seating suited to presentations or panel discussions.

If you’re looking for a standout venue for your next private party, RSA House has plenty to offer. Nothing Enrages the Tyrant More Than Hope: The Poem As Witness

20 May 2024

Join us in partnership with The Royal Society of Literature for two events with poet and novelist Anne Michaels. The first event will include a reading of a Wanda Barford poem followed by a lecture from Anne Michaels. There will also be an opportunity to network and book signing with Anne.

This event will take place in our Historic Great Room.

The Wanda Barford Memorial Poetry Lecture delivered by Anne Michaels.

Every poem is a poem of witness. Every poem, a form of rescue - from amnesia of every sort, from every kind of disregard and indifference. The hope of poems that witness war and political oppression is the assertion of justice spoken, spit in the eye of the oppressor, a message left for the others. And poems witness tyrannies less visible - illness, grief, shame, regret, terror, error, doubt. And others still, witness love that cannot wait – an entire life passes in a moment.

The poem says: precisely in the places where we feel most abandoned, we are not alone. No other public utterance so effectively names those places in us, and makes, in its precision, such ample space for both writer and reader. Here, the poem says, exactly in the place of dispossession – by a tyrant, by history, by a plan or policing, by chance, by time, by desire, by longing - exactly here and here and here, is the hope of being heard, and in that hope, solidarity. Every time we meet another’s gaze, here, in the poem, writer and reader, something is mended.

Anne will reciate the poem, followed by a lecture and book signing.
