Amberley Castle is in its namesake West Sussex village, 22 miles from Brighton and 60 miles south west of London. The first record of the castle is from 683, when the land where it still stands was gifted to Bishop Wilfird by the King of Wessex. In 1103 the first structure was erected, a hunting lodge for Bishop Luffa. This was seized by parliament during the English Civil War before being returned to the bishopric during the restoration in 1660, changing hands several more times over the years and last being used as a residence in 1987. Amberley has been a hotel since 1989, with the original mediaeval walls, gateway and two of the towers still in use.
Enclosed by a 60ft high medieval wall, it is well suited to private conferences, particularly those requiring tight security – there’s even a portcullis gate. Meeting rooms include the Great Room, which can accommodate 40 among its tapestries and suits of armour, and the more intimate King Charles Room for groups of up to 12. There is also the Green Room, a unique setting with a medieval backdrop that's best suited to intimate events. This beautiful option boasts views of the Sussex countryside through leaded windows, and is furnished with traditional, fine furniture.
The castle is available for exclusive hire should you wish to enjoy the venue in total privacy. With exclusive hire, you will gain access to Amberley's restaurant for up to 56 guests, or for larger events, you can hire a marquee in its stunning grounds for up to 250 guests.
It also offers an array of team building activities, including archery, falconry, horse riding and off-road driving.
