SquareMeal Review of Shackfuyu

Bronze Award

Bone Daddies' year-long pop up has gone permanent, with a refurbishment including a new upstairs bar and basement private dining. Housed in a former Italian restaurant, high-energy Shackfuyu makes use of the old pizza oven for mentaiko (marinated fish roe) and USDA beef picanha (a rump cut), while the succinct, keenly priced menu is an addictive pick-and-mix of flavours inspired by current trends: a moreish prawn toast/okonomiyaki (Japanese-style pizza) hybrid; yellowtail sashimi tostadas packed with contrasting textures, and delicious miso-coated roast aubergine. With so many hits, we can forgive the odd dud (disappointing mackerel escabèche) – especially when the sole dessert (springy kinako cake with whipped green tea ice cream) pays sweet dividends. The bar delivers strong cocktails, sakés and mighty sharing goblets of Koshihikari Echigo beer, plus gao bao buns at lunchtime.

Nice food that's a mix of east Asian cuisines (i.e. there's katsu curries and bibimbaps on the menu)

Great spot for a great night out

Food was delicious, ambiance buzzing! A brilliant spot to meet up with 2 old friends not seen in ages - and the bill was fair! A great night out!

Fantastic Tasting Menu Lunch
A delightful Japanese lunch in the heart of Soho where the food & service was excellent . Had looked at the menu before we arrived and the Tasting Menu looked like a good idea which would enable us to try many dishes on the menu . This turned out to be our choice due to the fact it was highly recommended by our waiter Antonio who really looked after us even with his recommendation of Saki to accompany the meal. So now onto the menu where we started with some Edamame with sweet chilli soy a great way to start before moving on to the amazing Beef Tartare & Peppered Prawn Crackers a fantastic combination. Then came the best Prawn Toast ever absolutely so tasty this was followed by Korean Fried Wings which were slightly sweet but fantastic. We then moved to the main part of the manu of Miso Aubergine , Iberico Pork Pluma & Hot Stone Rice with sesame, chilli & beef definitely the highlight and worth waiting for to finish dessert was a real treat of Kinako French Toast & Ice Cream. All this and the truly great attentive service really made our visit a real pleasure. I would highly recommend a visit plus would also suggest you try the Tasting Menu aswell as it is not only amazing food but excellent value for money. This is a lovely little and very friendly restaurant and I will definitely look forward to a return visit myself

Good value lunch
We ate here on Sunday having missed it when it was a pop-up last year and having heard good reviews then. Service was very friendly, the seating is a little "industrial", particularly the high seating, I wouldn't want to have a long leisurely lunch here but we certainly spent a very happy hour or so eating seabass ceviche, edamame, their version of a prawn toast (I couldn't even begin to describe it, just have it, its wonderfully light, crisp and delicious), a confit duck bun and a chicken chilli bun, washed down with a bottle of chenin blanc. Under £60 including service - that doesn't happen often in London. Definitely on our repeat visit list.
