SquareMeal Review of The Ivy Soho Brasserie

Bronze Award

The Ivy Collection has spread once again, with this large Soho site which is most closely related to The Ivy Kensington Brasserie. Unlike that site, Soho is a far clubbier proposition, perfect for this part of town and packed with flashy artworks and even flashier customers. It’s a testament to the formula that it feels different here, yet still unmistakeably The Ivy. That’s down to the menu which, just like every other outpost, offers the same please-all, international menu of prawn cocktails, chicken liver parfaits, steaks, grilled lobsters and that trademark shepherd’s pie. We can’t fault the food here, from a warm duck and watermelon salad crunching with toasted cashews, to jet-black, Dukkah-spiced aubergine atop sumptuous labneh. Prices are surprisingly accessible too (another Ivy trademark), while the cocktail list has been given particular attention, majoring in fizzing and fruity vodka-and-gin based mixes. With so much space, the restaurant is divided up into more and less informal sections and cubbies, while a large terrace is going to make this a hot summer ticket. Yes, it’s predictable stuff and yes, its gleaming demeanour won’t please Soho traditionalists, but it’s already popular and injecting a party buzz into this newly overhauled W1 street.

About

Set right in the heart on Soho on Broadwick Street, The Ivy Soho Brasserie brings together everything we’ve come to love about Ivy restaurants – elegant interiors, smartly-dressed waiters and crowd-pleasing food – with a cool Soho edge. This means that The Ivy Soho Brasserie is a perfect place to go for a variety of different occasions whether that be a large celebratory dinner or just an informal breakfast. One thing’s for sure and that is that you’ll be guaranteed to be well looked after at The Ivy Soho Brasserie.

From the outside, The Ivy Soho Brasserie looks like most Ivy restaurants with a green canopy covering a small seating area out front. Once you head in however, you’re greeted by colourful pieces of modern art which jump out of the walls; brightly coloured chairs sit around the many tables, and there is a signature glistening bar up one end with enough space for people to eat at the counter.

The huge food offering ranges from a breakfast menu which includes classics such as eggs benedict, to a separate menu for vegans and vegetarians. However, the main all-day menu is what most people come to Ivy restaurants for and The Ivy Soho Brasserie’s menu doesn’t disappoint. With starters ranging from truffled wild mushrooms, all the way through to a lobster risotto, it won’t be difficult to find a first course that appeals. Main courses include their signature shepherd’s pie, as well as a traditional fish and chips, and plenty more. If you have any space left, pudding options vary from crème brûlée to rum baba.

When it comes to drinks, there are a number of different choices available. As well as an extensive wine list, you can also try one of the many different cocktails on offer, or perhaps a bottle of The Ivy’s very own craft lager.

Good but could be better

We were welcomed and seated quickly. The restauant was busy and very loud. Staff were friendly, plentiful and attentive. Food was very nice, though the chicken roast was quite oily. As well as loud chatter we were placed directly next to the live entertainment of a singer and pianist which made the level of noise too much to hold a conversation. The bathroom was clean however there was no hand soap available even after informing the staff it was not refilled whilst we were there.

Worst experience on Mother's Day meal which was completely spoilt by incompetent and callous management

1 hour 15 minutes delay in getting to table with no apology from incompetent and callous management staff

Warm, buzzy atmosphere on an early evening Friday night. Cheerful, engaging, efficient service - well drilled. Brasserie classic food, all to a nice, value for money level. Would ceretainly go again.
