The Bull offers just about everything you could wish for in an unpretentious country inn, from casual vibes & real ales on tap to a gregarious mix of friendly staff & punters. The food’s pretty good, too, its local leanings given shape by ideas drawn from all over. Ingredients are important in the kitchen & it shows in a starter of Portland crab served with grapefruit, fennel, chilli, mint & rocket or a main course of pork & smoked bacon pie with mash & braised red cabbage, while desserts such as steamed Seville orange sponge pudding with ‘Birds’ custard are aimed at the nostalgia spot. True to form, the interior avoids flashy, try-hard gestures in favour of warm woods & soft colours.
