At Ralph Lauren’s carefully stage-managed Regent Street store, this equine-inspired destination replicates The Polo Bar at the firm’s Manhattan flagship. Deep-tan leathery luxe helps recreate a New England fantasy world, where food ranges from all-day light breakfasts (smoked salmon bagel, avocado toast, pastries) to homemade soups, oysters, salads or meat and cheese platters. Accompany the nourishment with coffee (latte, cortado, macchiato, et al) or any of a dozen wines by the glass. Alternatively, head straight for the well-tailored cocktails. We are drawn to a Gimlet made with Dorothy Parker gin that adds ginger to the traditional lime cordial. Also getting our vote is The Chairman (an absinthe-rinsed tumbler of WhistlePig rye whiskey, Cointreau Noir, maple syrup and pomegranate) – despite its designer price tag. Ralph Lauren stemware and barware are also up for grabs here, with half a dozen lead crystal ‘Broughton’ Martini glasses costing the best part of £700. Ouch!
