TV Chef Anthony Worrall Thompson, who owns The Greyhound in Peppard Common near Henley, was awarded just two stars out of five in his latest hygiene rating by food safety officers.
The recent visit resulted in a verdict of ‘improvement necessary’ to the ‘cleanliness and condition of facilities and building’.
The ex Ready Steady Cook host, who has also appeared on other cooking programmes like Saturday Kitchen, has described the rating as ‘harsh’, stating that he planned on calling the inspectors back within a few days to reevaluate. Adding, ‘It's not normal. We run a really clean kitchen.’
Despite believing the issue was nothing that would impact the kitchen's output, the chef also stated, ‘we are making the improvements that they suggested and everything has been addressed’
Anthony Worrall Thompson and his wife, Jay, describe their restaurant as the ‘perfect local’. Although the food hygiene rating may be at an all time low of two, it remains a favourite for many in the area. The gastropub, which focuses on high quality and locally sourced food, has an impressive menu that showcases dishes from across the globe, where mains range from £20 to £27, and for starters you can see the options peaking at £14 for a dish.
Out of all South Oxfordshire restaurants, only 50% have a five star hygiene rating, meanwhile there are no venues holding a zero star rating.
No stranger to challenging circumstances, Worrall Thompson also found himself in hot water back in 2012 after being reprimanded by police for being caught shoplifting five times, taking items including wine and cheese from the Tesco branch in Henley-On-Thames.
