SquareMeal Review of The Shed

Bronze Award

The Shed has clearly been galvanised by the success of its King’s Road sibling Rabbit, and it remains a haven for “happy and joyful” noshing. Devised and run by three foodie brothers, it packs all sorts of cheery locals into a long, colourful dining room that creates a “bit of the country in central London” – note the bar fashioned out of a tractor bonnet. The kitchen deals in “English-style tapas”, with produce garnered from the owners' farm and lots of artisan ingredients thrown into the mix. Deliciously crafted canapés (aka ‘mouthfuls’) are an “absolute delight” (try the pulled venison with lovage), while the rest of the menu is divided between ‘slow’ and ‘fast’ cooking – from paprika cuttlefish with black beans, sweet chilli and fennel to Nutbourne lamb with iron-bark pumpkin, braised shallots and reindeer moss. Cheery staff are on hand to share the fun. “A winner.”

Great food, weird 'pub' setting, frustratingly long waiting list for reservations.

We were booked in for the second sitting on friday evening, and firstly the table took 45 mins before it was ready. This meant we were forced to stand in the busy bar area blocking the door, which was awkward and annoying for everyone (including us)! When we did finally get our table, we were sat at a table completely unsuited to the size of our group. The first dish we ordered was the chorizo which is absolutely delicious! However, after this, every dish we ordered was either pretty inedible or average at best. I never usually write bad reviews, but we were all so disappointed by the food and overall experience, that i felt the need to this time. We obviously made the most of it and enjoyed the wine! But with a pretty expensive bill at the end of it, we really felt that we would not consider going back, which as a local restaurant for all of us is a shame.

Stand out Restaurant
I came here to celebrate my fathers birthday and couldn't have enjoyed the evening more. The Shed has now become my favorite restaurant in London and I can't stop telling everyone about it! The waiters are lovely and its as if you are invited to join the family. There's a great atmosphere and genuine rural vibe. The daily loosener was delicious and we all enjoyed the fact that so many of the ingredients are foraged. The food was definitely the high point, especially the lamb chips, and we all loved the sharing aspect. Its amazing how much emphasis is put on sourcing the produce and the passion for the food is shared by the waiters, chefs and owners alike. The Shed offers a truly unique, fantastic dinning experience, which is not to be missed by anyone!

Fantastic - definitely go here
Rarely have I had a meal and enjoyed every single bite so much. The food really is outstanding and I made an effort of telling the chef and the owner how good it was before I left. You order lots of small plates (2-3 per person on average) and the idea is to share it… it would be particularly good for large groups I feel. It's very simple food, but cooked with the most amazing array of flavours. Each plate is £7-£9 each, so when you have 2 or 3 of these, plus drinks, you're not looking at a cheap meal. However I give this 5 stars for value simply because the food was that good. The waitress was always topping our glass up and was really friendly too. The only slight down is that it is a bit expensive, but, as I said, it's worth every penny – for the service, food and intriguing interior design. It would be perfect for large groups but I went with one other person only and it was still really nice. It's very laid back too – wear trainers, hoodie et al. if you like! If you want to impress someone / several people with somewhere that's fun and laid back but also high in quality, come here

What a shame !
Our table was for 8.30 on a Saturday evening – may be that was the mistake, especially as it was my wife's birthday meal. On arrival we were shown to our table and all 4 of us stopped in our tracks…we had to sit at a table this small…4 of us ? There were no other tables free so this was it. We squashed ourselves in and I could sense trouble, my wife asked to leave ! I managed to persuade her to stay – actually, she couldn't move anyway as she was hemmed in between me, the wall and the man behind whose chair was wedged against hers. We ordered and the friendly staff quickly delivered our food – its was sublime ! So good that even my wife said it was good. The delight my tastebuds were experiencing just managed to balance out the shoving I received every time a waiter walked by our table. We finished off our plates and my wife asked for the bill ! ditching the birthday surprise that was due for dessert. So overall, amazing food but ruined by what I can only describe as an experience like trying to eat your dinner off your lap on a tube train in rush hour. Halve the number of tables and double the prices. Then I would return.

Original and delicious food. Fantastic joyful atmosphere, friendly but not in your face staff. Parading the roast of the evening was a real highlight. This has to be a great success!
