Proving the power of the pop up is as potent as ever, Louisiana cuisine specialists Decatur are the latest temporary venture to go permanent this Friday 1 April at Pamela on Kingsland Road, Haggerston.

The brain behind Decatur (named after a street in Louisiana) is Tom Browne (above) who – following the ongoing success of the Pamela, which popped up in December – will continue dishing up New Orleans-style Decatur oysters (chargrilled with garlic and hot sauce or raw with cucumber and jalapeño vinaigrette) alongside beer cheese (yes, really) and crackers with rabbit gumbo and smoked sausage.

Haggerston oysters and gumbo (below) for the foreseeable certainly sounds good to us. Browne explains: “I toured the US with a band from Baton Rouge, Louisiana in around 2010, playing up and down the west coast and mid-west of America, then all the way back down to New Orleans. Cooking and highlighting the hard-to-find-food of America’s southern states is what we are trying to do – I’m looking forward to establishing Decatur as a permanent feature here.”

The Sunday brunch (11am-4pm) deserves a special mention too: New Orleans-style comfort dishes include French toast with banana, whipped cream and pecans, buttermilk beignets (a sort of doughnut-cum-fritter, below) and fried chicken with gravy. We’re comforted just at the thought.
