SquareMeal Review of The Broadcaster

Bronze Award

Aptly named, The Broadcaster is a gastropub and restaurant nestled in White City at London’s iconic Television Centre.

Our visit, on a sunny evening, was enhanced by dining on the roof terrace, offering expansive views across the city, accompanied by a resident DJ and a vibrant atmosphere. The rooftop ambiance transports you to a summer party destination, while the lower floors provide quieter dining options, perfect for a more intimate dinner and conversation. The menu, self-described as ‘elevated pub cooking,’ evolves continually as the chefs prioritise locally and seasonally sourced ingredients. The drinks menu boasts a selection of wines, craft beers, cocktails, and mocktails, ensuring there is something for everyone.

We began with the St Ives Monkfish Scampi, paired with a robust curry tartare, showcasing a refined twist on traditional pub fare. The batter’s crispiness attested to the freshness of the preparation. For the main course, the pan-seared halibut with chargrilled asparagus and lobster sauce was artfully presented and delicious, a light dish that our server wisely recommended pairing with an additional side. True to its gastropub credentials, The Broadcaster delivers an exemplary steak and chips. The dessert menu, though concise, featured a freshly baked crumble topped with ice cream that was the perfect conclusion to our meal. Despite the evening rush, the service was friendly and attentive, with a keen eye for when our drinks needed refreshing.

For those seeking an intimate dining experience, the rooftop, with its lively DJ and dynamic atmosphere, might not be ideal for quiet conversation. However, for an evening of lively ambiance, excellent food, and superb drinks, The Broadcaster is a fantastic choice. Guests desiring a more tranquil setting may prefer the relaxed ground floor pub area or the first-floor dining room.

About

The Broadcaster is a lively pub, rooftop bar and dining room housed inside the former BBC Television Centre at White City. Whether you’re joining for pints at the bar, food in the dining room or drinks and a BBQ on its Rooftop, The Broadcaster is sure to become your new favourite local.

The Broadcaster is every bit the contemporary British pub, offering a great atmosphere, a wide selection of drinks and a menu of modern British pub dishes. The main menu boasts a selection of sharer dishes - at the time of writing this includes burrata with pickled golden beetroots and hazelnuts, as well as flatbreads (we like the sound of 'Nduja, onion, purple basil, chilli and honey) and some fresh, superfood-focused salads. For mains, choose from the large plates like hake and chips with crushed peas and homemade tartar, or get in the BBQ mood with something from the grill, such as Saltmarsh lamb cutlets.

There are other menus available too - The Broadcaster whips up crowd-pleasing brunch at the weekends with delights such as avocado, smoked salmon and poached eggs, or fried chicken Benedict with sriracha hollandaise. Come Sunday there's a cracking roast to had, with options of roast Castlemead chicken, Aged Dexter beef and mushroom and beetroot wellington, all served with Yorkshires, gravy and roast potatoes. On the drinks front, beer fans are well served with a good selection of beers on draught and in bottles, but there's plenty more to choose from. The wine list focuses on Europe and includes skin contact wine as well as more traditional choices, and there are signature cocktails and spritzes too.

As well as all of this, the rooftop is heated, sheltered and dog-friendly, and often hosts events throughout the year.

Smile training needed!

Good was delicious.

 Service was mediocre.

Bigger tips are gained when the waiters/waitresses SMILE or at least feign friendliness.

no need for a 12.5% service charge when only serving two people that had to order and fetch own drinks. That's a sneaky addition.

The restaurant was very busy and they over booked. The serves were overwhelmed and mixed our meal and took almost an hour to bring us drinks.

Great Service!

Great Venue, food was amazing, lovely friendly staff. Very relaxing experience. They provided a birthday message on a desert plate. Cant wait to go again. Looking forward to trying out the Sunday lunch menu!
